In this episode, we interview psychotherapist Dr. David Martinez, who shares with us what he has found it takes to bring about profound changes in our mental and emotional well being. There’s no magic pill. Ultimately, only we can make the changes we desire in our life, but it is possible to use certain tools, including sound, to meaningfully support us in the process.

Dr. David Perez-Martinez is an Integrative Psychiatrist, Therapeutic Sound Practitioner, researcher and lecturer. His work in the therapeutic use of sound dates back to 1977 when he utilized the voice as an instrument for self-awareness, empowerment and wellbeing. In addition to his medical degree, he is also a graduate student of Anthropology at the New School for Social Research where he studied under the world’s foremost anthropologist on Shamanism, Dr. Michael Harner. A life long musician, Dr Perez-Martinez has taken deep interest in music, previously working with noted ethnomusicologist Dr. Verna Gillis on researching and publishing the native music of West Africa and South America.
In clinical practice Dr. Perez-Martinez has completely integrated breathing exercises, mindfulness meditation, cognitive behavioral therapeutic techniques, physical exercise and therapeutic sound protocols with standard psychiatric care. His goal is to provide patients with self-empowerment tools and practices that can be utilized to complement and optimize treatment outcomes, decrease dependence on medications and to promote a greater sense of wellbeing.
Currently Dr. Perez Martinez divides his time between clinical practice, academic research, writing, teaching, lecturing and conducting workshops.
