Nick Goldsmith is a a former Royal Marine Commando, speaker and author who served over 10 years between 2007 and 2018 completing 6 operational deployments in some of the world's most challenging regions.
After leaving military service, following a diagnosis of Complex- PTSD, Nick turned his focus towards championing mental fitness. His deep & personal understanding of nature's role in supporting mental wellbeing has secured him a place as a thought leader in this field.
Nick now works with government, military and private organisations and charities on programmes to help foster professional growth and strengthen team connections. Alongside his wife Louise, he founded the acclaimed Woodland Warrior Programme in 2017. This CIC initiative, brought into the limelight by a 2022 BBC documentary, harnesses nature's therapeutic power to aid rehabilitation for Armed Forces & Emergency Service Personnel. With support from distinguished organisations such as the Invictus Games, the Veteran’s Foundation, and the Blue Light Card Foundation, the programme is now into its 7th year.
In this episode, Nick shares the difficulties he faced with his own mental health following multiple deployments and how this started his journey to reconnecting with nature. We explore the challenges that come with disconnection from the natural world and the levelling power of conversations around a campfire. Nick is unflinchingly honest and thought-provoking in his analysis of some of the challenges faced in modern society and is generous in sharing his lived experience, including why a daily walk can make all the difference.
