E83: Cannabis As A Cure To Big Pharma with Dr. Jacob Vigil
Manage episode 344528382 series 2861423
Dr. Jacob Vigil was coming up for tenure at the University of New Mexico, where he still works as an Associate Professor of Psychology, when he decided to take a step back and truly take stock of his life’s impact.
“I started to look at my own work and a lot of the work around me, and it didn’t seem like a lot of those efforts were actually amounting to improvements in our society,” he recalls. “I looked in the mirror and thought that I could do more than I’m currently doing. And at that time, I also opened my eyes to all the suffering that was taking place around me.”
Everywhere he looked, Dr. Vigil saw pain, in his community and in society. Specifically, he saw a lot of what he calls “secondary victimization” — or a lack of efficacy from traditional pharmaceuticals, as well as the harm that comes from the culture of dependency they’ve created. There had to be another way to relieve pain more holistically, he thought. That’s when he decided to dive deeper into studying cannabis.
Today a noted cannabis researcher, Director of the Medical Cannabis Research Fund and creator of the Cannabis Connection University, Dr. Vigil shares resources and education around a topic that’s been underpriortized by other academics. On this episode of Good Dudes Grow, Gary hears from Dr. Vigil about what some of those learnings are, and how they can be applied to treat everything from anxiety and depression to insomnia and chronic pain.
What You'll Learn:
- Why Dr. Vigil calls cannabis a “super medication” and an “existential threat to the pharmaceutical industry”
- What impact cannabis has on the endocannabinoid system (and what exactly that means)
- Why big pharma isn’t empowering people to take responsibility for their own health
- And much more!
Favorite Quote:
“I don't know how we got to this place in society where our own decision making over the most basic elements of our existence, like our health, has been stripped away from us. It's almost like we've been tricked into not thinking for ourselves and using common sense.” Dr. Jacob Vigil
