How truly sad this world has become- that people are purposefully seeking out a diagnosis, racking up ailments for bragging points, attention, excuses, and selfish satisfaction.
To cover this topic with me, we have Dr. Fred Moss, a psychiatrist for over 36 years who calls himself “the undoctor.” He shares his unique approach to mental health, focusing on human connection as the key to healing, rather than the heavy reliance on medication in today's society. Dr. Moss also discusses his upbringing, his passion for communication, and how his journey led him to rebel against traditional education and find fulfillment in working with people, especially adolescents in mental health facilities. Through storytelling, Dr. Moss emphasizes the power of communication and how it's vital to the process of healing and personal growth.
Dr. Fred Moss reflects on his time as a childcare worker, where he found that mutual healing occurred through effective communication. However, he grew disillusioned with psychiatry as it became more about prescribing medication than real connection. Not only that, but prescribing medication forcefully and quickly. After witnessing the rise of Prozac and the shift toward treating discomfort as a chemical imbalance, he began questioning the widespread reliance on medication. Moss eventually took patients off their meds and found that they improved significantly. He emphasizes that while some patients feel medication works for them, many are misdiagnosed or over-medicated, and the real solution lies in human connection rather than pharmaceuticals. His journey led him around the world, exploring different approaches to mental health, but his central belief remained that communication and connection are at the heart of healing. He calls for a shift in focus from medications to fostering human connections to help people reconnect with humanity.
This leads us to an interesting discussion on A.I. in the medical field and replacing human connections. The conversation covers several different aspects of this, from logic vs. emotions, to A.I. sex-chatbots.
From there, we get into the discussion of not just over-diagnosing but the reality of modern social media and society, which encourages and centers around having something wrong with you, and seeking more medical ailments either mental or physical, if not both. We talk about the attention, money, and mentality behind all of this.
