Pushing Back Against AMA's Support for APRN Oversight by Medical Boards

In the latest edition of the show, Gideon attempts to rally the nursing community to mount a cohesive response against the American Medical Association's call for greater oversight over nonphysician providers, such as nurse practitioners and physician assistants. The Nursing community must fight for respect and recognition as KEY stakeholders in healthcare. Current ANA's President Dr. Jennifer Mensik-Kennedy insisting that “At the end of the day, the licensing and regulation of APRNs do not and have never required the oversight of state medical boards. U.S. nursing regulatory bodies have the authority and oversight because they understand the practice and principles of nursing to ensure that competent nursing care is provided by licensed nurses."
I became a nurse in 2007 and have had stints in the emergency department, medical intensive care unit, neuro intensive care unit, coronary care unit, post anesthesia care unit, electrophysiology lab, flight nursing in the U.S. Air Force, and clinical nursing instructorship. I served as an FDA drug investigator for four years. I am U.S. Air Force combat veteran and am currently on active duty as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Public Health Service.
