What is communication? Why is it important? And how does it impact the culture in the operating arena?

In this episode I review four different types of communication including individual, team, environmental and organizational.

I then highlight why all organizations need to define their vision, mission statement and core values to define how staff and leadership operate, behave and interact.

Just as I teach adolescents and teens the importance of using their core values as a compass to govern their decision making in an effort to move them closer to their goals, core values in an organization are a road map for staff and leadership. By conducting consistent employee assessment, leadership has the opportunity to collect multiple data points and identify trends, just as we do with a patient’s vital signs.

When negative trends are identified early, changes can be made to realign actions of the team at all levels. If negative trends are overlooked or ignored, this erodes your vision and your staff’s commitment to upholding your core values.

As I discuss examples core values that I see as key in any facility (being safe, respectful and responsible), I conclude real examples and propose the idea of practicing healthy methods of communication by conducting mock interactions. But role playing different scenarios, staff members such as new nurses, surgeons, anesthesiologists, scrub techs and even management become familiar with how to discuss matters of importance and what to expect from others in return.

If you are experiencing frustration, resentment and anger, please contact me for (2) hours of complimentary support. As a Board Certified Nurse Coach I am passionate about helping others stop struggling and start succeeding.
