The Bible Project video illustrates God's Holiness like the Sun, we get disintegrated when we get too close - not because it’s bad, but because it’s so good.

Holy meaning:

  • Google: "dedicated or consecrated to God or a religious purpose; sacred."
  • Hebrew: Set apart for a specific purpose (Hebrew)
  • The Gospel Coalition: The holiness of God refers to the absolute moral purity of God, the absolute moral distance between God and his human creatures.

Holy, Holy, Holy is the LORD God Almighty

  • 3 times repeated because it’s important and gives emphasis.

Israelites set apart nation, had to be made holy before entering His presence

  • Deuteronomy 7:7-8 “The LORD had His heart set on you and chose you, not because you were more numerous than all peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. But because the LORD loved you and kept the oath He swore to your fathers, He brought you out with a strong hand and redeemed you from the place of slavery from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt”

Become holy and clean in order to enter God’s presence in the Old Testament

  • Leviticus 15:31 “You must keep the Israelites from their uncleanness, so that they do not die by defiling My tabernacle that is among them”
  • Leviticus 19:2 “Be holy because, I the LORD your God, am holy”
  • Leviticus 20:22, 24c, 26
  • Clean from sin, ceremonially clean

Jesus brought holiness to us in the New Testament

  • Isaiah 6 pointing to Jesus
  • Jesus came and brought holiness to us
  • Healed the sick, brought dead back to life

We are not holy on our own

  • Atonement - Jesus’ blood, sufficient sacrifice
  • Sanctification - process of becoming holy, more like God

Called to live a holy life | 1 Peter 1:16

  • Because we have been made clean by His grace | Romans 6:15 “What then? Should we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? Absolutely not!”
  • Obedience | John 14:15 “If you love Me, you will keep my commands”
  • Shine to others | Matthew 5:16 “let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.”
  • We are His people | 1 Peter 2:9-10 “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His possession, so that you may proclaim the praises of the One who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.”
  • John 15:16 “you did not choose Me, but I chose you”

May we be in awe of His Holiness

  • Revelation 4:8 “Each of the four living creatures had six wings; they were covered with eyes around and inside. Day and night they never stop, saying, “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God, the Almighty, Who was, Who is, and Who is to come.”

What then?

  • NOT perfection in order to earn salvation.
  • NOT complacency because we are already saved.
  • BUT because we have been saved, may we draw near to Him and become more like Him.
  • May we be set apart for His purposes.
