114: Cops Getting Charged: Navigating Risk/Reward, Legal vs. Moral Obligation and Society's Expectations with Sgt. Chris Nielsen
Manage episode 429364191 series 3539627
It is to put voice and vocabulary to these critical concerns. And what better person to dive into these topics than returning guest, Sgt. Chris Nielsen, who not only has a trove of legitimate policing experience through ops, tactics, administrative oversight and leadership, but legal education and background, as he serves as a consultant to police litigation.
We talk about these jarring dynamics, which would have us doing not only mental gymnastics, but moral and ethical parkour. In all seriousness, our aim and discussion points are geared to help officers think responsibly about how to best show up through mindset, training, and influencing culture. Of course, these considerations also involve the other participants of the criminal justice and legal systems- from community leaders to politicians, and members of the public- which we discuss as well!

Chris grew up in a fatherless home raised by a mother with significant mental health issues. Despite the odds, he put himself through college, graduate school, and law school.
Chris left his career as a trial attorney in 2011 and became a police officer. His police career has spanned assignments in patrol, SWAT, special operations, and administration. He is currently an administrative training sergeant.
Outside of policework, Chris is an independent consultant specializing in police practices, policies, and procedures. He and his wife, Jenn, have been married for 19 years. They have two wonderful kids. He unwinds by mountain biking, skydiving, CrossFit, coaching his son’s competitive motocross pursuits and being a girl dad. You can find him at @dude1point0 on IG.
