For many of the women I coach, dreaming outside the framework they’ve followed for years can feel foreign. But this doesn't mean that you lack creativity and are unable to dream. I truly think that dreaming big is a skill, and like any skill, you can strengthen it with practice! In this episode, I share a simple yet powerful suggestion I recently gave to one of my clients who was feeling stressed: close the loops you can. When life feels overwhelming, it’s not always about finding a huge, life-changing solution. Instead, it’s about identifying those small, lingering tasks that are within your control, and taking action on them. We’ll explore: How “open loops” can amplify stress. How closing even one or two loops can free up mental space. Practical examples of what this could look like in your life, from deciding on a gift to delaying a decision until you have more capacity. Big stress doesn’t always need a big solution—sometimes, it’s the small things that create the most relief. Take a few minutes today to identify and close 3-5 loops in your life and close them. It’s a simple step you can take to create more breathing room in your mind and ease the overwhelm. I actually find this question helpful to ask in the moment, especially when I'm feeling a little stressed or overwhelmed or irritated. Besides my thoughts, is everything okay? I think I got this question from the author James Clear, and I absolutely love it. More often than not, we're doing okay, and it's our perspective on what's happening that is creating our overall experience. And when we know that it's our thoughts or perspective creating our experience, we give ourselves a chance to make adjustments. When my husband goes out of town, I have a little tradition: I pick a show we wouldn’t normally watch together and plow through an entire season. This time, I chose the show Alone . I ended up loving it so much that I knew I had to bring it into today’s podcast episode. If you’re not familiar, Alone is a wilderness survival show where contestants are dropped into extreme conditions to see how long they can last. As I watched, my coach brain kicked in (as it always does!), and I started thinking: How does this apply to real life? Thankfully, most of us won’t ever face a wilderness survival scenario. But the challenges contestants face on Alone reveal some powerful lessons about resilience, adaptability, and mindset that we can learn from. In today’s episode, I’m sharing five key takeaways from Alone and showing you how to apply them to your own life: Energy Is Finite—Spend It Wisely : Focus your energy on what truly matters to you, and don’t waste it on things that drain you unnecessarily. Success Requires Both a Plan and Adaptability : Plan for the results you want, but be ready to pivot when life throws you a curveball. Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about having a purpose. Like what’s the point of it all? I think this is a pretty common question to ask yourself—especially when you’ve reached a point in life where you’ve checked off many of those big, cultural milestones that are supposed to define “success.” Maybe you’ve built a career, started a family, or bought a home, and now you’ve settled into your routines. You pretty much know how most days will go from here on out. So it seems like you should feel fulfilled at this point, but certain questions might start coming up for you: Is this it? Should I be doing something more with my life? It can feel pretty unsettling to be in that place, and may leave you wondering if what you’ve created is enough. But what if it's not about doing more —but about seeing your life differently? What if your purpose isn’t something out there to find, but something you can uncover in the life you’re already living? The Emotional Cycle of Change 9:27

In today’s episode, I’m talking about a framework called the Emotional Cycle of Change developed by psychologists Don Kelley and Daryl Connor. It explains the emotional journey we undergo when we voluntarily decide to change our lives. If you’re anything like me, you’ve likely experienced a roller coaster of emotions when tackling a challenging goal or trying to shift a habit. However, Kelley and Conner assure us that this experience isn’t as chaotic as it may seem. The emotions we encounter are actually quite predictable and normal. By understanding the cycles of change in advance, you can map out and anticipate what's happening ahead of time and help yourself along the way. For instance, when you find yourself in Stage Three, the Valley of Despair, you’ll recognize it as a sign to keep pushing forward rather than quitting on yourself. So, as you listen, I encourage you to reflect on your own experiences with change. What stage are you in? What's coming next? How can you help yourself keep going, even if that critical voice in your head is telling you to give up? We think, "Oh, yeah, I’ll do that... later." We picture our future selves being more relaxed, more organized, more productive, but it’s always later , right? It’s always after we find more time or the perfect opportunity. And what I’ve noticed is that later often never comes. Today, I'm going to help you turn that around. Instead of waiting for a future version of yourself to take action, what if you did it now ? What if, right after you finish listening to this podcast, you start doing that thing you’ve been thinking about immediately, on the smallest scale possible? Last week, I did a podcast episode called Putting Yourself Out There to Make New Friends . I got a follow-up question from one of my listeners, asking how to prioritize deepening the connections once you've made them. I think this is such a great question because, for most of us, having deep and meaningful relationships is one of the most important things in life. In Bronnie Ware's list of the Top 5 Regrets of the Dying , one of the regrets is: "I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends." I decided to reach out to my community of coaches for advice. Here's what they had to offer: Not every friendship needs to go deeper. Some friendships are great just as they are. Maybe you have activity buddies—friends you love hiking with, going to see concerts with, or grabbing a drink with, but you keep things light and fun. And that’s totally okay. If you want to get to know someone better, tell them. It’s similar to dating—you may need to make the first move in order to have a deeper relationship. Consistent facetime is key. To build a deeper friendship, you need regular, consistent contact. It doesn’t have to be daily or even weekly—setting up a monthly or quarterly meet-up can work too. Start with positivity. Friendship expert Shasta Nelson suggests that a strong friendship needs a 5:1 ratio of positivity to negativity. For every 20 minutes of venting, offloading, or personal self-disclosure, you want to balance it with 80 minutes of fun and light-hearted moments. Build vulnerability over time. True friendship deepens with vulnerability. Share your personal thoughts, feelings, and experiences as trust grows. A few months ago, I did a podcast episode with Dr. Em Wong called How to Live Vibrantly to 100 . In that episode, we talked about the importance of social ties and friendships as we age. Building and maintaining connections is one of the key factors for healthy aging. But let’s be honest, making friends and staying connected can be a challenge for many people, myself included. My husband and I had a hard time making friends during our first years on the road, which put a lot of pressure on our relationship, as we were each other's only source of companionship. In the past two years, we've made a concerted effort to meet new people and now have a wonderful circle of friends. Change is an inevitable part of life, but navigating it can be challenging. In this episode, I share five tips to help you manage and embrace change. Acknowledge that a lot IS going on in your life . When you're making big changes—like moving or switching jobs—things are far from routine. It's natural for our brains and bodies to sound the alarm when faced with uncertainty since they’re wired to keep us safe, and major lifestyle shifts don’t fit neatly into that safe zone. Separate the facts from your thoughts . By distinguishing between neutral facts and your thoughts or perspective of those facts, you can gain awareness and empower yourself to take on a different perspective. Emotions don’t mean you’re making the right or wrong decision . It’s normal to feel a range of emotions when making big changes. Feeling doubt or fear doesn't mean that you’re on the wrong path. Compile a list of questions your brain is already thinking . Write down everything your mind is offering you—big or small—and sort through what’s in your control to solve and what’s not. Borrow confidence from past experiences . Reflect on times when you’ve handled uncertainty and change before, and draw strength from others who have been through similar situations.
