A specific strain of bacteria might help prevent and even treat colorectal cancer. The studies in animals show potential in treating other cancers, too.

You’ll hear about

  • how many bacteria inhabit a human and how much do they weigh (I bet you underestimate their weight)
  • what is a dysbiotic gut microbiome
  • the gut microbiome and its influence on colorectal cancer
  • studies of specific strains of bacteria that show reducing cancer in mice
  • what is the potential of life biotherapeutic products

My guest today is Dr. Ana Montalban-Arques, the CEO of Recolony. Trained in molecular biology and biotechnology she researched host-microbe interactions in the gut.

Recolony is a Swiss startup, a spin-off from the University of Zurich. They aim to develop a bacteria-based oral therapy to treat and prevent colorectal cancer. No chemotherapy, no side effects – oral administration at home. Please note, their treatment is in the pre-clinical phase and it means it is not yet available for patients.
