Repairing Spinal Cord for a Wheelchair Free Future: Prof. Giuseppe Perale, Regenera
Manage episode 436409189 series 3469528
We are speaking about the world where wheelchairs will not be needed after a spinal cord injury.
There are 250 000-500 000 spinal cord injuries globally each year.
“A bunch of crazy guys,” in the words of my guest, him included, wants the spinal cord to self-regenerate.
He is sure that in the future, we won’t be even speaking about regenerating the spinal cord after an accident
but about healing.
In this episode, you will hear
- how much time it takes from a spinal cord injury event, an accident, to reach an operating theatre – in Switzerland
- why this time is crucial
- how proprietary hydrogel and stem cells stop the cascade of events further damaging the spinal cord
- how mice after a spinal cord injury, could walk again
- and when will people after the spinal cord injury not need a wheelchair
Prof. Giuseppe Perale is the CEO of Regenera. A bioengineer who became hooked on regenerative medicine in high school and never let go. Apart from heading the neuroregeneration research lab at USI, Università della Svizzera italiana, he is also a motorcycle rider and a pilot.
Regenera is an Austrian-Swiss startup that aims to repair spinal cord injury in the subacute state. Their SpinoSave combines biomaterial – hydrogel and stem cells harvested from the patient’s fat tissue. The co-founders are Giuseppe Perale; Filippo Rossi, a chemical engineer; Pietro Rossi; Michael Raghunath, CMO.
