Napoleon Bonaparte - Emperor of France - Conqueror of Europe - 25 Interesting Facts

On Traveling Through History, we take a look at one of the most consequential leaders in world history, Napoleon Bonaparte. Napoleon rose from humble beginnings to become the Emperor of France and the conqueror of 80 percent of the countries in Europe before he was deposed in 1815 and exiled to St. Helena Island.

Napoleon the 1st was born August 15, 1769 in Ajaccio, Corsica and died May 5, 1821 in exile on St. Helena Island. He was a French General, First Consul (1799–1804), and Emperor of the French (1804–1814/15), one of the most celebrated personages in the history of the West. He revolutionized military organization and training; sponsored the Napoleonic Code, the prototype of later civil-law codes; reorganized education; and established the long-lived Concordat with the papacy.

Napoleon’s many reforms left a lasting mark on the institutions of France and of much of Western Europe. But his driving passion was the military expansion of French dominion, and, though at his fall he left France little larger than it had been at the outbreak of the Revolution in 1789, he was almost unanimously revered during his lifetime and until the end of the Second Empire under his nephew Napoleon III as one of history’s great heroes.

He seemed to be the man of the Revolution because it was due to the Revolution that he had climbed at so early an age to the highest place in the state. He did not believe in the sovereignty of the people, in the popular will, or in parliamentary debate. Yet he put his confidence more in reasoning than in reason and may be said to have preferred “men of talent”—mathematicians, jurists, and statesmen, for instance, however cynical or mercenary they might be—to “technicians” in the true sense of the word. He believed that an enlightened and firm will could do anything if it had the support of bayonets; he despised and feared the masses; and, as for public opinion, he considered that he could mold and direct it as he pleased.

We review a short video about the history of Napoleon and his life and discuss the most important points about this important historical figure in world history. We also take a quick look at a scene from the movie "Napoleon" showing his final battle and his loss at Waterloo that ended his military career and reign as emperor.
