Flourgon's 1988 hit song "We Run Tings" is a declaration to all who will listen that "we are the masters of our fate; we control circumstances - circumstances don't control us". This song embodies a triumphant, daring, resolute spirit; it suggests that we are not a pushover and we won't take anything lying down. To have this kind of spirit; you must be self aware and know the difference between responding and reacting. Responding carries with it a certain level of emotional and spiritual maturity, wisdom and discernment. To respond is to first go within, assess the circumstances and then decide if it is worthy of a response - no response is also a response - and there are some people who need to receive the gift of silence from us. To react is to engage without intention; you don't pause to reflect on the choices and consequences you simply allow your emotions to take over. This often ends with someone going on an apology tour! The good old saying "he who angers you; controls you" has a lot of truth to it. If someone can get a rise out of you; then you sadly are no better than a puppet. Of course anger has it's place and is a very useful emotion if managed correctly. So I encourage anger; just make sure it's a deliberate response and not an unwitting reaction. With the current state of the world there is a pervading sentiment of lack of control; we are at the mercy of our nations' government; we still live in lockdowns and curfews. It is quite easy to feel and believe we are not in control. I encourage you to change your perspective - you are in control of how you view the situation and how you will process and ultimately engage - whether you respond or react. When you change the way you look at things; the things you look at change. Now more than ever this is so true. So what will you decide? Will you choose to respond or react? We will be loud and proud in your declaration "we run tings tings nuh run we" will you live from moment to moment confident in the knowledge that whatever happens you will be ok? It is my sincere hope; that as we face a new month and the rest of 2021 each of us will be encouraged and emboldened by the lyrics of the Flourgon song and we will live our lives defiantly thinking, believing and saying "WE RUN TINGS TINGS NUH RUN WE"
