Reflecting on the New Testament Passages on the Church and Government:
A few New Testament passages that address the topic of government, authority, and how Christians should relate to
them:
Romans 13:1-7
Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established...& This passage teaches about submitting to governing authorities because they are instituted by God.
1 Peter 2:13-17
Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority, or to governors...Peter encourages believers to honor and submit to human authorities as a part of their witness.
Matthew 22:15-22 (Paying Taxes to Caesar)
_"Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s."_
Jesus teaches about the separation of what belongs to the government and what belongs to God.
Titus 3:1-2
_"Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good..."_
Paul emphasizes the need for Christians to be subject to rulers and to be peaceful and kind.
1 Timothy 2:1-2
_"I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings
and all those in authority..."_
Paul encourages prayers for government leaders so that believers can live peaceful and quiet lives.
Acts 5:29
_"Peter and the other apostles replied: ‘We must obey God rather than human beings!’"_
When government conflicts with God's commands, believers are called to obey God first.
