Photoshop Tutorial - Smart Objects and Smart Filters

This session will tell you all about the magic of Smart Objects and Smart Filters. For any retoucher, it’s important to develop a non-destructive workflow. Smart Objects and Smart Filters will give you the ability to go back and forth between your actions without permanently damaging your photo.

For example, after many hours of work, I had 7 images needed to be blown up approximately 170%. The client failed to mention that part. Instead of having to blow up pixel data, or start over again; I was able to simply go back to Camera Raw, and output the images blown up (which were way sharper than Photoshop’s pixel data). Simply dragging over the existing Adjustment Layers, Masks, and Smart Filters; I was able to give the sharpest image possible, without much trouble.

Aside from the Lasso-based tools, we can also use the Magic Wand when it comes to making selections in Photoshop. You can press and hold the Quick Selection Tool to choose the Magic Wand Tool. Adjustment Layers work like tinted sheets of glass that you overlay on top of your image one at a time. It’s kind of like a tinted or colored light bulb. You can turn on/off the effect, or adjust the values as a separate layer on top of your original image background layer. For instance, on top of your base layer (original image), we can make tone adjustments as well as color adjustments. Each of these adjustments will be placed on separate layers, on top of your original background image. Because you’re working on a separate layer for all these adjustments, you are not causing any permanent damage to your original background base image. You are effectively preserving it pixel by pixel in case you need to undo your changes later. As an example, when you click on one of the icons in the Adjustments Palette, it will automatically add a new layer in your Layers Palette, as well as open up the Properties window for that particular adjustment you chose. Smart Objects and Smart Filters will give you the ability to go back and forth between your actions without permanently damaging your photo. For example, after many hours of work, I had 7 images needed to be blown up approximately 170%. The client failed to mention that part. Instead of having to blow up pixel data, or start over again; I was able to simply go back to Camera Raw, and output the images blown up (which were way sharper than Photoshop’s pixel data). In short, spotting simply means that you are going to remove any extra dust spots, or other very quick dirt removal. While it usually means dust from the camera lens, it could also mean quickly removing any other sort of blemishes from the picture, like lint on clothing or freckles. Again, the real key is that it is quick, and usually takes less than 10 minutes, and less than 5 minutes is even better. Ideally, this would be the very first thing done to an image, before any other sort of retouching is done. This Adobe Photoshop Cloning Tutorial is about the High Pass and Low Pass Frequency Separation method of cloning. We covered many different topics in our Photoshop Extended Cloning Video Tutorial, but we wanted to give you this advanced way to clone, as a sample of the content you can find in the full video. If you use the Clone Stamp Tool, Healing Brush, or Spot Healing Brush straight onto a layer, you are making an exact clone with little control over the fine details. If you approach your clone with a High Pass Layer for texture, and a Low Pass layer for color and tone, you greatly increase your ability to soften or remove skin blemishes, facial hair, and even pores, without a dreaded repeating pattern. This is used by professional retouchers who need to create porcelain skin for the models. This is one of the very few ways of achieving this level of high precision, perfect skin retouching. This Photoshop video tutorial will introduce Alpha Channels. This is the second of four videos about working with channels. We will explain what Alpha Channels are, and how they differ from regular Color Channels. Before you watch this video, we recommend you watch the previous Adobe Photoshop tutorial about Color Channels, and you can then follow this one with Spot Channels, and the Channel Mixer. Alpha channels are additional channels that can be added to an RGB or CMYK image. They are generally used to hold complex masking information. While layer masks can hold the same information, Alpha channels allow you to have access to that mask, but not have it actually used within the image. As an example, if you mask a person, you can use an Alpha Channel to hold the mask of a full person from head to toe. You can then use a layer mask in the image would contain parts of that person, like the arms, legs, face, etc. So basically, the Alpha Channel holds the full figure, and the layers use parts of that mask. But again, this is only an example. In the end, it is only a dummy layer used to hold information that you may need later.
