This interview was a treat! Dr. Danielle Tolman, PT and Dr. Abbie Ross, PT, NCS are joined by our listener favorite Jeff Walter, PT, DPT, NCS to talk to Ian Curthoys, Professor Emeritus. This discussion covers different ways sound and vibration can stimulate the vestibular system, and how it can be used for diagnostic purposes at bedside.

If Ian Curthoys' name sounds familiar... it's because it should! In 1988 Halmagyi and Curthoys introduced a subjective test of semicircular canal function—the head impulse test (HIT)! Read his original article here: https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamaneurology/article-abstract/587833

His most recent publications:

  • Pastras, C., Gholami, N., Jennings, S., Zhu, H., Zhou, W., Brown, D., Curthoys, I., Rabbitt, R. (2023). A mathematical model for mechanical activation and compound action potential generation by the utricle in response to sound and vibration. Frontiers in Neurology, 14. [More Information]
  • Curthoys, I., McGarvie, L., MacDougall, H., Burgess, A., Halmagyi, G., Rey-Martinez, J., Dlugaiczyk, J. (2023). A review of the geometrical basis and the principles underlying the use and interpretation of the video head impulse test (vHIT) in clinical vestibular testing. Frontiers in Neurology, 14. [More Information]
