51JalLp+z2L._SX328_BO1,204,203,200_Well it has been an awful year with regard to mass shootings around the US – and we’re not even finished yet. So it is timely that Deepa Iyer’s book, We Too Sing America, was the focus of my latest episode of Intersections Radio, the last episode for 2015.

Deepa Iyer is a racial justice and immigrant rights activist, currently serving as the Senior Fellow at the Center for Social Inclusion. Previously, she was the Executive Director of South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT) for ten years. In fact, that’s when we first met. She also contributed a powerful Angry APA Minute in solidarity with #BlackLivesMatter.

deepa iyerHer powerful writing has appeared in The Nation, Colorlines, etc. and now she’s published her first book, We Too Sing America: South Asian, Arab, Muslim and Sikh Immigrants Shape Our Multiracial Future. We talked about the impact of 9/11 on these communities and the more recent news of mass shootings and repercussions on specific communities (and then we ran out of time before we could talk about #BlackLivesMatter).

This was a live phone interview for my December episode of Intersections Radio. Check out the podcast!

Air date: 12/4/2015 https://sarikadmehta.files.wordpress.com/2015/12/deepaiyer_intersections_podcast.mp3
