Podcasts evolve and this is the case for this monthly podcast from a garden education podcast for in particular, home gardeners in the Chicago area to a podcast focusing on all aspects of the food system. Why? Well, because we want to enhance our communities' ability to have a secure food supply, improve diet quality, mitigate social determinants of health and health disparities, and support for the co-creation of healthy communities for all.
Whether you have listened to the trailer and/or episode or not we are expanding our podcast. That said we are starting off here with information for our gardeners. I bet you can tell that it is fall and that the temperatures are dropping. So it is time to clean out your garden over the next couple of weeks. The tip here is for container gardens in general but is pertinent to containers that were used for your vegetable crops. Just in case you want general fall cleanup information here it is.
We did a workshop overview of season extension strategies and will distribute the recording of the session in a couple of weeks. However, as we head into the winter think about indoor gardening. We will cover indoor gardening opportunities in more depth in the next episode but consider an indoor herb garden for part or all of your indoor gardening for this winter.
As part of our newly expanded podcast, we begin with a short overview of the logistics of the grocery store. Now that you know something about the place most people obtain their groceries now dig into how products are marketed and how you may not be as in control of your consumer decisions as you think. We will be covering more consumer education so that we help you save money on your food purchases and hopefully encourage you to eat more fruits and vegetables.
In addition to covering season extension in the next episode, we will be covering crop planning so that you can get off to a great start should you decide to start seeds for the upcoming 2023 season. We also will have more food system literacy resources as well.
Feel free to contact Orrin Williams at orrinw@uic.edu. Thank you!
Keywords: fall garden clean up, indoor vegetable gardening, indoor herb gardening, neuromarketing, consumer education, grocery store tours
