The Fika Crew talk with Sophie Soklaridis, PhD and Holly Harris, MA from the Centre for Addiction & Mental Health affiliated with the University of Toronto and the Collaborative Learning College about their work using "different knowledges" to co-produce instruction and a research agenda. The Fika Crew invited (and she accepted!) Naomi Steenhof, BScPhm, PhD from the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Toronto to talk about the nature of expertise. She explains how pharmacists (and all health professionals) can develop adaptive expertise before cognitive entrenchment sets in. Productive failure, meaningful variation, and asking more "why" questions (rather than focusing on "what" questions) can help learners develop their adaptive muscles. Happy New Year! The PharmacyFika crew critically examines educational trends, how fads develop, and why they fade. In this episode, you'll discover: 1) Tina loves boiled peanuts but is circumspect about the nutritional value of fish sticks, 2) Jeff, the grittiest guy we know, is ironically skeptical about measuring and teaching grit, 3) Stuart thinks learning styles aren't something that should influence teaching approaches, and 4) Kristin finds general ability outcomes appealing but challenging to implement when the rubber meets the road. _______________________ Resources Sun X, Norton O, Mamcekivell SE. Critical reflection is an important part of our work as teachers. Kristin, Jeff, and Stuart discuss the four lenses through which teaching practices can be examined: the personal lens, the student lens, the colleague lens, and the theoretical lens. The Fika Crew (back in full force this month) talk about the challenges of receiving feedback. How we receive feedback is colored by our identity (and beliefs about self), the relationship with the person giving feedback, and our beliefs about what is "true." Few of us have had formal instruction on how to receive feedback well - but perhaps this should be explicitly addressed in our curricula. We'd love to receive your feedback! Three of the Fika Crew (missing Kristin's wisdom) talk about their challenges and successes in delivering meaningful feedback to learners. Using a consistent and shared framework for providing feedback to learners in various contexts (assignments, practice laboratory, OSLEs, and experiential education) can make feedback more apparent, more actionable, more efficient, and more effective. We'd love to receive your feedback! Please rate our podcast and provide comments about this episode using your favorite podcasting app. _______________________ Resources Stone D and Heen S. The Fika crew invited Caroline L. Ko, PharmD, BCCCP - Associate Clinical Professor at the University of the Pacific - and Ila M. Saunders, PharmD, BCOP - Health Sciences Clinical Associate Professor at the University of California San Diego - to talk about their work to create the PharmGradWishList and how service can be uplifted and recognized in the academy. Ultimately, faculty bear the responsibility of telling the story of how their service work makes the world and the academy a better place. But perhaps we should create better structures for measuring, reporting, and valuing service work. In this epidose, we speak with Denise H. Rhoney - Ron and Nancy McFarlane Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy - and Zubin Austin - Professor at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Toronto - about Competency-based Education (CBE). There is a movement afoot to transform health professions education to de-emphasize time and focus on a core set of competencies. However, defining the competencies, creating authentic assessments, and dismantling "courses" to ensure curricular alignment are major challenges to turning the promise of CBE into a reality. Is it worth it? Or is CBE just another pedagogical methodology du jour? Introductions and Fika Sharing from 0:00 to 2:36 Our conversation about competency-based education starts at 2:36 ______________________________ Resources Lucey CR, Thibault GE, Ten Cate O.
