Episode 175: Psychological support for kids with PANS and PANDAS with clinical psychologist Brita List
Manage episode 431022470 series 3574458
In this weeks episode, Jess is joined by Clinical Psychologist Brita List to chat about the psychological approach to PANS and PANDAS in children. Paediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS) and Paediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS) occur after an infection, most commonly a strep infection. In PANS and PANDAS, the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy brain cells, leading to autoimmune processes that affect central nervous system function.
In this episode, Jess and Brita will discuss the following:
- What is PANS and PANDAS from a psychologists perspective;
- How to differentiate between PANS, OCD, and anxiety;
- Brita's journey to working with PANS;
- Barriers PANS families face in seeking support and reasons behind them;
- Comparing psychological interventions for PANS with other conditions;
- Healthcare professionals who can support PANS families.
Through the expertise of Clinical Psychologist Brita List, listeners gain a deeper understanding of PANS and PANDAS and the unique challenges faced by families seeking support. This discussion emphasises the need for a comprehensive support team, including professionals beyond just the medical field. This episode is a must-listen for anyone looking to understand PANS and PANDAS.
