"Boxing Day" is over. Time to step out and look around!

We are a practice profession. We are supposed to be developing our skills, knowledge, and overall work habits continually. However, we sometimes create our own personal and professional barriers to our own growth.
In this InterpreTips, I discuss how we build our own walls, boxing in our thoughts, our perspectives, our talents, our decisions, and our interpretations. Let's think through this to achieve more for ourselves, our profession, and the communities we serve as sign language interpreters.
Enjoy!

Send me a Text Message here. Comedy?! Really? Well, it's funny if you've lived it. Here is a take on what we all know as sign language interpreters. Things people believe about us. Odd things we hear often. Things we know about ourselves that is just silly outside of our profession. Or things that just happen to pop in our minds. Enjoy a laugh or two and I come back for more. Send me a Text Message here. Young kids just don't get it! Let's take a silly look at how generations of sign language interpreters may have frustrations, and just plain grumpiness at times. We all need to roll our eyes at times. WE may get annoyed at how things are not the same as they were. But sign language interpreters have been adapting, changing, and respecting others for a long time. Civility is still needed, as always. Send me a Text Message here. Will you look at THAT! Can you believe it?! Looks aren't everything, but they help us deduce who people are, what they may think, and how they communicate. As sign language interpreters we often have to be "judgmental" of who people are to help us understand what they mean. Is that good? How do we do that? Let's look beneath the mask of impartiality and see what we really think and do. IW Community A great place to meet regularly to laugh, learn, and lean on each other. Send me a Text Message here. WE CAN'T GO ON! Yes, we can. We just need a bit of work. Isabelle gives us reasons to use what linguistics has to offer to make our interpreting strategies work in new ways. She also tells us the answers to the question; will we still have sign language interpreters in the future? The answer, as you might think, is - it depends. It depends on how we confront the working conditions, educational gaps and more that are impacting our profession. Enjoy this until next week's episode continues the conversation with Isabelle Heyerick. IW Community A great place to meet regularly to laugh, learn, and lean on each other. Send me a Text Message here. I see what you did there. I didn't understand it, but I see it. We don't need to know the language to know if an interpretation is effective or not. I discuss how we can analyze our practice work to improve our interpretation skills to serve the communities better. Similar to Sharon Neumann Solow's experience I share my story of how I could teach an interpreting program without be highly fluent in the languages used.
