In this episode, I explore how Jehovah's Witnesses are raised to view voting as incompatible with their beliefs. Growing up as a Witness, I was told that even participating in student council elections was discouraged, as it was seen as a steppingstone to “real” politics. Jehovah's Witnesses believe in waiting solely for God's Kingdom to rule and are taught not to place their trust in human governments. But what are the real-life consequences of this approach?
I share my thoughts on how this mindset can lead to missed opportunities and critical voices being left unheard. For example, imagine 500 people who rely on essential benefits but choose not to vote, believing their voice doesn’t matter, while a few supporters of an opposing candidate turn out to vote, ultimately deciding the outcome. It's a powerful reminder of what can be lost when people feel discouraged from participating in government.
I also discuss the risks Jehovah’s Witnesses face if they do choose to vote and how they could face disassociation from the organization if they’re found out. Join me as I break down the implications of this policy and reflect on its personal and societal impact.
