It’s never EVER too late, and never EVER not possible! Meet Jeanne Fernandez-McShane, who at 67, has just started her surfing journey, and she is fierce! She is such an incredibly accomplished woman, you will want to just vibe on her grit! Jeanne’s story is a little different - rather than her whole life transforming from surfing, she brings her life’s wisdom and own transformation TO surfing. Jeanne, an engineer, relocated to Costa Rica, and is part of the growing group of women who are creating and being lifted up by community in the lineup. For this podcast, we spent some time drilling into the nuances of beginning later in life, digging into physical tips as well as acknowledging the mental game and how challenging it can be. Jeanne says surfing is the most difficult sport she has ever tried, and she is no stranger to hard, having blasted through barriers her whole life. Raised when women’s sports were almost unheard of, she was warned not to be athletic or she might damage her lady parts! (Yes, young ladies, this was a thing!) She found a workaround by developing a passion for motorcycles and then becoming a drag racer, setting records at speeds upwards of 130 mph. She discovered running in the 70s, which opened the door to a series of sports, not the least of which was rock climbing. She is the founder of She Climbs, a non-profit dedicated to promoting a strong female presence in climbing, and helped create the organizations that eventually brought rock climbing to the Olympics, the same year as professional surfing. You will not want to miss Jeanne’s humor, wisdom, and life hacks!
