Back in the 1990s, the U.S. Air Force had zero female fighter pilots. In 1991 a law was passed that allowed women to engage in combat, but a Department of Defense policy stated that women couldn’t fly combat. This all changed when a top female graduate Maj. Gen.Jeannine Leavitt persisted and eventually became the first-ever female US fighter pilot. Maj. Gen. Leavitt has served as a role model not just for the world but inspired Marvel's creation of one of the galaxy's biggest superheroes, Captain Carol Danvers.
