In this episode, Dr. Brad Miller will talk all about disability and ability, as well as the difference between pity and empathy.
Dr. Brad talks about her professor in graduate school, professor Sylvia. Because of her condition, Professor Sylvia is confined in a wheelchair. Her assigned classroom in the building was on the second floor, thus Dr. Brad and his other classmates needs to carry her because the only way to the second floor is the stairs.
Despite this struggle, Professor Sylvia never complains, and ultimately helps Dr Brad learn what dignity and being enabled are all about.
Dr. Brad discusses the story of how Tracee saw her disability as an opportunity. Tracee also emphasizes how you should show empathy and not pity.
To Empower other people, you need to do the following things. First, treat people with dignity. Second, look people in the eye. Third, Don't pity, show empathy. fourth, look for ways to empower, not disempower. Lastly, people need to work together and change things that are not justified.
We're all disabled sometimes, but we all are enabled. Let's be part of a team that works for everybody to be enabled always.
