In this weeks episode of The Playful Psychologist podcast, I am going to share with you how I prepared my clients for going on maternity leave. A lot of these tips are relevant for going on any type of extended leave as an allied health professional, with a few tips specific to going on maternity leave. But, by far the trickiest part of being a pregnant psychologist, was informing the families I work with, that I would be going on leave. Now, don’t get me wrong, 99% of my families were absolutely ecstatic for me and started buying me little baby gifts almost immediately. However, as anyone who has changed jobs or gone on extended leave as a psychologist knows, transitioning your clients to colleagues is a complex and tricky experience. For me, this happened in four stages. This episode will walk you through those stages.…

The Playful Psychologist

In this episode of The Playful Psychologist, I explore whether every 'quirky kid' is autistic. I think when it comes to autism, we are more aware, but also more confused. We seem to have this idea that any social difficulty or any emotional regulation difficulty constitutes a diagnosis of autism, and that is not the case. I strongly believe that a lot of children with emotional regulation difficulties are misdiagnosed as having autism. So many children are diagnosed as having ODD, ADHD, and even Autism purely because they struggle to regulate their emotions. But emotional regulation difficulties alone, are NOT enough to diagnose any of these conditions. It is our job as allied health professionals to help children with their emotions and work closely with the parents, before jumping to conclusions about a child having a developmental disability. This episode will highlight key diagnostic criteria we are looking for when trying to determine whether a child may meet DSM-5 criteria for autism.…

While teachers are there to facilitate your child’s learning, their roles and responsibilities have changed dramatically in the 21st Century. When we think of the role of a teacher, we think of planning activities, delivering instructions, assessing learning, and managing classroom behaviour. However, more recently, teachers have been expected to also juggle their existing role, whilst also monitoring and assessing the emotional and behavioural well-being of their students. Consequently, teachers are often stretched thin both in time and patience. This episode will go through the main referral reasons and how to go about this.…

One thing that resonates so much for me with your books, is that all your content is meaningful and explores really normal situations that would resonate with every single child. When you are creating your storylines, do you have a particular target audience in mind? Your books help build the emotional intelligence and resilience of their young readers. What activities do you think parents could do at home to build on the foundations that your books lay in this regard? Do you think emotional intelligence and resilience is something we actively need to teach our kids? In some EXTREMELY exciting news, Trace also has BRAND NEW books coming out in a new series called 'My Emotions.' Little Big Bully This book sensitively describes how and why bullying happens, and offers a range of well-researched techniques to help children develop coping skills along with proactive strategies that describe what to do if they are being bullied or are witness to bullying behaviour. In this weeks episode of The Playful Psychologist, I explore the role of a child psychologist, what this entails, and how to choose the right psychologist for your child. Child psychologists can provide both assessment and therapy for learning difficulties, behavioural concerns, mood disorders, anxiety-related disorders, and developmental disorders. Child psychologists can also provide support and assistance to children and families who may not have a specific diagnosis. The first step to helping your child with any concerns you may have, would be to book an initial appointment. This episode explores: When to make an appointment What sessions may look like What assessments may be offered Questions to ask when choosing a psychologist What to look out for when choosing a psychologist…

In this weeks episode of The Playful Psychologist, I explore the social and emotional milestones that children meet. Please note, I do not advocate for tracking milestones of any kind unless specifically asked to by a health care professional. I do however advocate for parents being well informed to ensure they are able to identify any areas of concern that may arise, to ensure that early intervention is an option if necessary. The six stages discussed in this episode are: Taking an Interest in the world Attachment Intentionality and basic cause and effect Development of sense of self Emotional thinking Emotional Thinking and elaboration If you would like more information on social and emotional milestones, you can check out my milestone card resource. These cards have been designed as a guide to provide you with information and suggestions on different developmental milestones across infancy, childhood, and through to adolescence. They outline the social and emotional milestones that children reach at different ages and offer information, strategies, and in some cases, links to additional reading you can do to inform yourself on how to help your child. Across the 109 cards included in this resource, you will find information related to children from infancy (0 years) to the late teenage years (18 years), ensuring that you will get ample use of this resource for years to come. As well as milestones, I have included 'information cards' on a some topics that required more of an explanation, and have also included links on some cards where you can find more information if you please! Some cards also include suggestions for books you can purchase to use with your child or educate yourself on a particular topic. On this week's episode of The Playful Psychologist, I explore executive functioning skills and how you can help kids develop strong executive functioning skills. This episode is based on a blog post, written for my website, by Alexandra Finkel from NYC. You can follow @kindmindstherapy for more information on Alexandra and her clinical work. Executive Functioning skills are responsible for helping people of all ages manage things like organising, planning, self control, memory, and more. These skills are incredibly important for developing independence and the ability to follow through on tasks and thoughts. There are many ways to build these skills in kids, and this episode will share four main ones. In this weeks episode of The Playful Psychologist, I explore anxiety and how it presents across the lifespan, by asking the popular question, can anxiety be cured? This is a question I get asked about a lot. And the short answer for me, is No. Keep in mind that ‘cured’ implies that it will never return, and I don’t believe a person who experiences anxiety in its true form will ever be absolutely free from anxiety. Unfortunately, I think the term ‘I am so anxious’ or ‘my anxiety is through the roof’ has clouded our understanding of just how debilitating anxiety can actually be. And again these frivolous statements can make it seem as though anxiety is nothing to worry about. However, those who are diagnosed with an anxiety-related disorder will let you know that there are absolutely ways to manage anxiety, however it never fully disappears. It comes and goes in waves depending on our environment and life circumstances. What I do think however, is that someone who has anxiety can learn to be better equipped with strategies that work for them and help manage anxiety, so that when it arises in the future, they are aware of what they have to do, thus reducing the impact that anxiety has on them in that situation. This episode will explore: A quick review of anxiety disorders How age impacts the presentation of anxiety The impact of early intervention for anxiety disorders Long term management of anxiety disorders To read more about anxiety disorders, check out my website where I have several blog posts on this topic, as well as my online store for further resources: www.theplayfulpsychologist.com…

In this week’s episode of The Playful Psychologist, I explore fidgeting and fidget toys. Fidgeting is making small movements with your body, usually your hands and feet. It’s associated with not paying attention, and often reflects discomfort and restlessness. For example, if you’ve been listening to a lecture for a long time, you may find yourself tapping your pencil. Fidgeting can increase your physiological arousal and help you feel more alert. The physical activity of fidgeting can provide a temporary distraction from whatever activity you’re doing. Some scientists argue that the “mental break” fidgeting provides is actually your body’s way of trying to stay focused on the task at hand. Recently, we have seen a rise in the craze of ‘fidget toys.’ All of a sudden, it seems as though every child in every classroom ‘desperately needs’ a fidget toy! But, are fidget toys really beneficial for kids, or are they just another way for children to become distracted in the classroom? This episode will explore the following questions: - Do kids actually need fidget toys? - How do fidget toys actually work? - How do fidget toys impact the sensory system? - How are sensory integration and fidgeting linked? In this week’s episode of The Playful Psychologist, I am joined by Emma Gray to talk about postpartum mental health. Emma is a mum of two who is really passionate about sharing the highs and lows of parenting. Emma is also the founder of a community organisation called The Nurtured Village. Together with twelve other mums across the east coast of Australia, she organises meals and gifts for new mums and young families in an effort to advocate for maternal mental health. Emma is also the host of a podcast called The Nurtured Village. I wanted Emma to join us today to talk about this topic, because I personally found the fourth trimester extremely challenging. Absolutely nothing went to plan for me, I had pregnancy complications, a serious car accident while pregnant, difficulties breast feeding, family stuck interstate during COVID and so on. I felt like every time I reached out to friends who had kids, they would tell me how great everything was. And when I would say something like ‘oh I’ve actually had a crap day, I’ve found it really hard’ they would say ‘oh same’ and I’d feel frustrated that they didn’t tell me that to begin with, and that I had to be the one to say ‘this is hard, this sucks.’ I wanted to do this episode to let other mums know they are not alone in feeling overwhelmed. I want this episode to help mums feel heard, but also for everyone else to give them an idea of how they can support new mums too and for psychologists who may not have children of their own, to understand the toll that the fourth trimester can take on the mental health of the mum. In this episode, Emma answers the following questions: What was the hardest thing about the fourth trimester? How did your body react to the lack of sleep? What were some of the things you did for yourself in those early days or, looking back, what were some of the things you wish you did for yourself? I personally have a really supportive husband who is so hands on but I still felt like I needed even MORE support than he could offer me. Is this something you experienced? Looking back, what sort of support did you need from friends and family? Did they give you the right kind of support or did you need something different? What can people do to support new mums? What kinds of pressures did you get from ‘the outside’ about your parenting? In this weeks episode of The Playful Psychologist, the topic of Carer Burnout is discussed. Caregiver burnout is a state of physical, emotional and mental exhaustion. It may be accompanied by a change in attitude, from positive and caring to negative and unconcerned. Burnout can occur when caregivers don't get the help they need, or if they try to do more than they are able, physically or financially. Many caregivers also feel guilty if they spend time taking care of themselves rather than taking care of their loved one. This episode explores: What causes or contributes to caregiver burnout? What are the symptoms of caregiver burnout? What can you do to help work through carer burnout? Where can you turn to for help and how can you ask for help? What things can you do to help yourself if you are experiencing burn out? This episode is proudly sponsored by Mister Jones. In this weeks episode of The Playful Psychologist, I explore autism and some of the confusions surrounding diagnostic 'labels' and misconceptions around how individuals on the autism spectrum may present. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a lifelong, developmental condition that affects the way an individual relates to their environment, interacts with others, communicates, and copes with sensory input. The main areas of difficulty include social communication and interactions, as well as restricted/repetitive behaviours and interests. The word ‘spectrum’ tends to imply that there is a range of difficulties that people living with autism might experience. That is, different individuals have different ‘levels’ of autism. This episode explores: Changes to the diagnostic criteria for autism The difficulties with the mainstream schooling system when it comes to autism Do children with autism always present as 'loud' and 'behaviourally challenging?' Why a collaborative approach is so important Lunch time difficulties & autism At the end of this episode, I mentioned a course that I recently created called The Autism Masterclass. This course was born out of a desire to fill a hole in our current curriculums. So many therapists and teachers have told me that their tertiary studies lacked education on autism and that they didn’t know where to turn to for more information. This five-part course has been designed to inform parents, educators, therapists, carers, and support workers about autism. This course differs from most because it is taking a multi-faceted approach to autism. It is not only looking at one specific presentation of autism and is absolutely not only looking at autism in children. Through this five-part series, you will build your knowledge base around autism as a whole. You will learn how autism impacts on the individual, the family, their education, their therapies, and the course of their life through to adulthood. Each workshop in this course comes with its very own workbook. In the workbook you will find a summary of everything that is discussed, activities, reflection tasks, links to free resources, links to further reading, and links to free videos for you to watch to further enhance your understanding of autism. This is the final episode of The Playful Psychologist for 2020, and what a year it has been! Psychologists have been pushed harder this year than ever before and we all know how difficult it has been to maintain boundaries during tele-health sessions and not being able to physically ‘leave work at work’ because let’s face it…work is now your dining room table! This episode explores common difficulties that psychologists may experience in in setting boundaries. The boundaries this episode will discuss are: Time boundaries: the hours you spend engaging in non-billable client-related activities. Email boundaries: when and when not to respond to emails. Client boundaries: session time and going overtime, working harder than the client, and transference. All psychologists, but particularly new psychologists, can really struggle with boundary setting, and this episode definitely speaks from my own personal experiences, so I really hope you find it helpful! Thank you to all my listeners for your support in 2020. I’ll be back in 2021 with brand new content. In this episode of The Playful Psychologist, I discuss some of the common misconceptions about routines and why parents try to ‘avoid’ them. I also discuss how routines can actually help with spontaneity and creativity! Routines are a normal part of life for most people, even those who consider themselves spontaneous. Routines don’t have to be rigid. They don’t have to become boring for you and your child, and they definitely do not have to feel like ground hog day. They can, in fact, inspire us and release us to experience higher levels of creativity and success because they offer us a level of predictability and control. Daily routines might include: The time to get ready in the morning Bath times, mealtimes, nap times and bedtimes Housework, cooking and cleaning schedules Play time, family time and outdoor play So, how can routines help children? In this episode, the following points are explored: Routines give infants and toddlers a sense of security and stability Routines encourage a child’s social, emotional, and cognitive development Everyday routines can be used as teachable moments Routines help increase family bonds Routines help develop and establish expectations Routines help establish healthy, constructive habits Routines offer stability during times of change or stress…

In this week’s episode of The Playful Psychologist, I discuss the different between bribery and reinforcement. When I work with young kids, I often suggest positive reinforcement as a strategy. However, the most common response is ‘isn’t it a bad thing to bribe my child’ or ‘I don’t want to teach my child to rely on bribes!’ This episode is going to explain how bribery and reinforcement are not the same thing. This episode will also discuss - Why positive reinforcement is effective - How to choose an appropriate reinforcer - How to deliver a reinforcer - What to do when a reinforcer stops working - Common mistakes made when trying to implement positive reinforcement - Examples of positive reinforcers - How to phase out reinforcement - Different types of reinforcement schedules A great website for more info and downloads: https://positivepsychology.com/positive-reinforcement-psychology/#does-it-work To learn more about positive reinforcement in school settings, check out my Behaviour Bundle: https://www.theplayfulpsychologist.com/shop-1?Collection=Behaviour%20%26%20Sensory%20Difficulties…

Welcome to Season 2 of The Playful Psychologist! This season will include some interviews with other health professionals, as well as information requested by you guys via my social media platforms! Impostor syndrome is a psychological pattern in which individuals doubt their skills, talents or accomplishments and has a persistent internalised fear of being exposed as a "fraud". in other words, it’s the idea that you've only succeeded in your career/schooling due to luck, and not because of your talent or qualifications. In this episode I explore: - What imposter syndrome is - Who it affects - Why it occurs - How it differs from ‘nervousness’ - Negative automatic thoughts associated with imposter syndrome - Ways that you can support yourself if you are experiencing imposter syndrome - ‘Real’ Self-Care and how that differs from ‘a face mask in the bath.’ At the end of the episode, you’ll hear me talk about my new initiative, ‘Boost a Biz,’ which is all about supporting small businesses. Developmental milestones are behaviours or physical skills seen in infants and children as they grow and develop. Rolling over, crawling, walking, smiling and talking are all considered milestones. Milestones are different for each age range and offer important clues about child's developmental health. Reaching milestones at the typical ages shows a child is developing as expected. But, are developmental milestones important for parents to obsess over? In this episode, I discuss what developmental milestones are and whether they are important to know about. I also explore the following areas: Should parents track milestones? What is the difference between developmental screening and developmental monitoring? In this weeks episode of The Playful Psychologist, I discuss emotional intelligence and why I believe it is SO important to focus more on emotional intelligence over IQ. Emotional Intelligence is the ability to understand, use, and manage your own emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges and defuse conflict. Having emotional intelligence helps you build stronger relationships and achieve your school/career goals, as well as your personal goals. It can also help you to connect with your feelings, turn intention into action, and make informed decisions in situations. While the world has been focused on academic achievement in childhood, emotional self-regulation has been largely ignored. This is concerning, as current research suggests that emotional intelligence is TWICE as strong as a predictor as IQ for success in later life! What this means is, it’s not always the smartest person who is the most successful! Your IQ isn’t enough on its own to be successful later in life. Yes, your IQ can help you get into a university course, but it’s your emotional intelligence that will help you manage the stress and emotions when facing challenges in your degree. IQ and EQ exist together and are most effective when they build off one another. In this episode, I discuss why emotional intelligence is so important and how it differs from IQ. I also discuss the components that make up emotional intelligence (according to psychologist David Goleman). These include self-management, self-awareness, social awareness, and relationship management. Lastly, this episode will discuss ways you can help your child develop their emotional intelligence based on the book ‘Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child’ by Dr John Gottman.…

In this episode of The Playful Psychologist, I explore 'Theory of Mind' (TOM). Theory of mind is the ability to attribute mental states: beliefs, intents, desires, emotions, opinions, and knowledge, etc. to oneself & to others. Theory of mind is necessary to understand that others have beliefs, opinions, and feelings that are different to our own. TOM begins to develop at a pretty young age, around the 18 months to 2 years. At this age, children showing concern for others is the most obvious way that children show TOM. You may even notice that your child frowns or gets irritable when another child is upset or an adult is yelling. They may even attempt to console that person using words/phrases they have heard other adults use. Having TOM is a really important social skill, as it provides the ability to predict and interpret the behaviour of others. During infancy and early childhood, children learn the early skills that they'll need to develop their theory of mind later on, such as paying attention to people and copying them. Theory of mind is crucial for everyday human social interactions and is used when analysing, judging, and inferring others' behaviours. This episode will help you understand: - What is Theory of Mind? - Why is TOM so important? - How do kids show TOM at different ages? - How can you encourage your kids to show TOM? - Do all kids show TOM? - What to do if you are concerned your child is not showing TOM? In this episode of The Playful Psychologist, I share how you can use ANY story book to create an emotional learning lesson. I also share my own favourite picture books and give you the reasons as to why I love them, and how to use them to facilitate a lesson on emotional awareness, identification, and regulation. Most story books have a clear beginning middle and ending and you can use almost any story book to talk about emotions. Picture books are perfect for teaching about emotions at home, but are also super useful in the classroom. The role of the 21st Century teacher has changed drastically. While teachers are there to facilitate your child’s learning, their roles and responsibilities have changed dramatically over the past few decades. When we think of the role of a teacher, we think of planning activities, delivering instructions, assessing learning, and managing classroom behaviour. However, more recently, teachers have been expected to also juggle their existing role, whilst also monitoring and assessing the emotional and behavioural well-being of their students. This is an extremely challenging task for teachers, especially considering that most teachers do not feel as though they are given adequate training during their tertiary studies to work on emotional expression/regulation skills with their students. This podcast episode explains how to use story books to explore these lessons with students at school, with your clients in therapy AND with your own kids at home. For your reference, the books discussed are: For Younger Children: In My Heart by Jo Witek Unstoppable Me by Bethany Hamilton & Adam Dirks Inside Out (the story books/activity books) by Disney Book Group When I'm Feeling (series) by Tracey Moroney The Huge Bag of Worries by Virginia Ironside The Great Big Book of Feelings by Mary Hoffman & Ros Asquith My Mixed Emotions: Help Your Kids Handle Their Feeling by Maureen Healy The Invisible String by Patrice Karst How Full is Your Bucket? by Tom Rath & Mary Reckmayer For Older Kids & Teens: Some Brains by Nelly Thomas Hey Warrior by Karen Young Love Your Body by Jessica Sanders…
