Cruel optimism is a term coined by Lauren Berlant, and used by Johann Hari, author of Stolen Focus, to describe a focus on individual responsibility that trains people to adjust to a morally unjust social system. Some self-help advice out there is a perfect example of this. Is this also true of the Climate of Joy podcast?
