Today's episode is brought to you by Velocity ACT. Slay the ACT ogre with Velocity ACT.

I recently spoke with Tim Hall of Velocity ACT. Tim is a teacher/tutor with almost twenty years of experience both in standardized test prep (SAT/ACT) and in classroom instruction.

Tim's tenure as test prep teacher at Bishop Dunne Catholic School saw a 150-point increase in average school-wide SAT scores and a 4-point average increase in ACT scores—and things have only gotten better from there: with a tutoring company in his hometown of Dallas, Tim has seen an average improvement of 200 points and 6 points on those tests. There is no substitute for experience.

In our conversation, Tim shares:

  • The single most important factor in determining whether the SAT or the ACT is the right test for you.

  • Four strategies for tackling the ACT, including:

    • Timing and pacing

    • How to “own the test”

    • Setting goals for improvement

    • Using the process of elimination

  • Advice for each section of the ACT, including:

    • Four guiding questions students should ask themselves for the English Section

    • The single most important criteria for selecting an answer in the Reading Section

    • Understanding how the Math Section is laid out, and how that can guide your answer choice
