“I don’t think a person should run unless he’s being chased.” We beamed down Dimension Films’ 1998 teensploitation sci-fi horror, The Faculty, directed by Mariachi man and Rebel Without a Crew, Robert Rodriguez (From Dusk Till Dawn, Sin City), from a screenplay by the preposterously articulate, teen telly voice of a generation, Kevin Williamson (Dawson’s Creek, Scream).
When student, Casey Connor (Elijah Wood) discovers a parasitic new species that reacts unusually when placed in water, then observes thirsty Herrington High faculty members standing under sprinklers, glugging endless cups of H₂O, and acting peculiarly all round, he begins to unravel the mystery of his school—his teachers are aliens. Could it be a conspiracy? An invasion akin to The Puppet Masters by Robert Heinlein? Maybe The X-Files is right! A band of rebels, including Zeke (Josh Hartnett), Stokely (Clea DuVall), Delilah (Jordanna Brewster), Stan (Shawn Hatosy), and Marybeth (Laura Harris) must unite in a race against time to prevent these “pod people” from infesting and enslaving the entire town.
Were we tweaking, or did we get some bad sh*t? Did it need a f*cking eye dog, or was it on a yellow brick quest for a brain? Did it flog the bishop, or work hard for that D? Was it a great big bastard mistake, or were we sucking its toes ‘til graduation? With Devlin and Patrick absent, it was up to high school heroes (and geeky Stephen King kids), Gali and Matt, to save the podcast!
