Watson, still recovering from his time in Afghanistan, studies his new roommate. Holmes seems quiet and solitary, and he sinks occasionally into a stupor that suggests he could be a narcotic user, but Watson dismisses this thought. Holmes has a lot of knowledge in certain areas like poisons, and criminal cases, but has no knowledge about what Watson deems to be common knowledge, like that the Earth revolves around the sun. Holmes also seems to be often visited by many unknown people from all sorts of different classes and creeds. One morning, Watson wakes up early, before Sherlock leaves for the day, and reads the newspaper. A section has been notated, and Watson reads it. The author claims, that a studies man can learn anything about a person or a situation if only they are observant enough. Watson ridicules the article. Holmes announces that he wrote it, and then goes to explain that the observations made in that article and the ones he uses every day for his work and reveals that the visitors to the apartment are his clients. When Watson exclaims disbelief, Holmes then goes on to explain how he knew that Watson came from Afghanistan. After this a man comes up the stairs with a letter for Holmes.
