David Berkowitz, also known as the "Son of Sam," is an American serial killer who terrorized New York City in the late 1970s. Born Richard David Falco on June 1, 1953, and later adopted by the Berkowitz family, he experienced feelings of abandonment and social isolation from a young age. Between 1976 and 1977, Berkowitz carried out a series of random shootings, targeting young couples in parked cars, killing six people and wounding seven others.
Berkowitz became infamous for leaving cryptic letters at crime scenes, taunting police and the media, and referring to himself as the "Son of Sam," a name he claimed was inspired by a demonic entity. His crimes sparked widespread fear and panic in New York City, leading to one of the largest manhunts in the city's history.
He was captured on August 10, 1977, after a parking ticket led police to his apartment. Berkowitz confessed to the killings, attributing his actions to the influence of demonic voices. He was sentenced to six consecutive life terms in prison, where he remains to this day. Since his incarceration, Berkowitz has claimed to have found religion and now refers to himself as the "Son of Hope," though many remain skeptical of his transformation. His case is a landmark in criminal history, reflecting the complexities of mental illness, media influence, and the nature of evil..
