At Kouri Richins' preliminary hearing, a judge ruled that there was enough evidence to proceed with a trial, which is scheduled to begin in April 2024. Richins, who authored a children's book on grief, is accused of killing her husband, Eric Richins, by poisoning him with a fentanyl-laced drink. The prosecution presented evidence that Richins had attempted to murder her husband once before his death, suggesting she learned from that attempt and applied it to the fatal poisoning.
The court also heard about her financial motivations, including allegations of mortgage fraud, forgery, and making fraudulent insurance claims after her husband's death. The defense argued that the preliminary hearing was biased in favor of the prosecution, but the judge found sufficient cause to proceed to trial. The trial is expected to last about four weeks.
