Not everyone listening to this podcast wants to become an entrepreneur in the truest sense of the word. I get that but here’s the thing, many people who eventually become entrepreneurs didn’t set out to obtain that moniker. It happened naturally over time.

You may think that Doire’s book, Entrepreneurial You, is espousing this route. Go be an entrepreneur and if you think that after listening to the podcast, I’m afraid you’ve missed the point.

Entrepreneurial You is really more about kick-starting your journey. Getting you to take small steps, to dip your toes into the water, to fiddle around with different things so you can find something that sticks.

And when you do find that something, whatever it may be, use her book as a guide to see if you can turn it into something you can get paid for.

While I loved all of Dorie's actionable tips scattered throughout the book, To me, the most important aspect of entrepreneurial you is this notion of preparation. Preparing for things in life you don’t expect because you never know what the future may hold.

What seems secure to you today may not be so secure tomorrow and that salary you hold so dear, the salary that frankly stops you from moving forward and pursuing something you’re passionate about, well, here’s a reality check for you.

It can disappear literally overnight.

Think about that for a minute. What would you do if tomorrow you were called into your bosses office and the HR manager is there to let you know your position has been eliminated?

In today’s age of corporate consolidation and the coming age of AI and blockchain, this is a very real scenario. Some of you listening may have already experienced this.

So I ask you, what would you do if tomorrow your salary went to zero? What is your backup plan and keep in mind, get another job, isn’t really a backup plan when the mortgage is still due.

As Dorie mentioned, pursuing something on the side is a great way to mitigate risk, provide you with skills, additional income and can ultimately make you less dependant on the day job.

On the flip side, A side hustle may also make you more valuable in the day job, assuming of course if your company values the new skills you've acquired.

So I’ll close out today’s show by asking the question Dorie asks at the end of her book.

What are you working for?

If your answer is the next paycheck, then it might be time for you to consider alternatives, to pursue a passion, to take small steps towards discovering your Entrepreneurial You.

Taking those first steps is not easy, but I promise with each step you take, you will learn and move forward as long as your willing to give up the ghost of what you imagined your career would be, so can finally grasp what your career could be.

Don’t forget to pick up a copy of Dorie’s book, Entrepreneurial You and while you’re clicking things on the screen I’d appreciate it if you added in a copy of my book, CareerKred into your cart as well.

That’s wraps us up for today. Until next time. I’ve been Ryan and I’m out.
