Manage episode 426130644 series 3439855
In this episode of the Big Dawgs podcast, Manning Sumner welcomes Bruce Bryan and Legend Tarver.
Bruce Bryan is a Public Speaker, Author, Criminal Legal Reform Strategist, and Mentor. Bruce, at 23 years old, was wrongfully convicted of a 1996 murder conviction (due to a drug-related shootout) and was incarcerated for 29 years, from 1996-2023. In December 2022, Bruce was granted executive clemency and released April 24, 2023. Bruce has since appeared on the Joe Rogan Experience with Josh Dubin sharing his story and continues to work alongside him to get other wrongfully convicted people exonerated as well.
Legend Tarver is the lead fitness Coach at LEGACY in Wynwood, a Criminal “Justice” Activist, and the founder, alongside his wife, Amanda Tarver, of the non-profit organization Three Hundred Letters where they treat incarceration as a family affair, healing families from within to end intergenerational traumas and cycles of incarceration.
In the episode, they discuss Bruce’s and Legend’s stories of their time in prison. Bruce shares the importance of changing your mindset to change how you view your external reality, as well as how knowledge is power. They discuss prison culture, generational incarceration patterns, and some of the societal causes of what drive people to commit crimes. They also discuss the systemic problems of prisons and the solutions needed to address such issues. Lastly, they discuss how being a vessel for change and surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals to elevate is key to making a difference for oneself and others. The overall message is: your past doesn’t define you, persistence overcomes resistance, mindset is everything, and you must take control of not how you will serve time, but how time will serve YOU.
