Det midaldrende ægtepar var netop trådt ind i den fint indrettede teaterloge. Manden, som var en høj, ranglet, ja faktisk benet udseende mand med skipperkrans-skæg, satte sig i en polstret gyngestol og tog sine kones hånd. Han så træt ud, og en del ældre end sine 56 år. Men det havde også været fire hårde år fyldt med krig, død og ødelæggelse. Ægteparret holdt altid hinanden i hånden, når de sad sammen, og de virkede til at nyde hinandens selskab. Der var næste 1700 publikummer til stede for at se stykket ”Our American cousin” denne aften den 14. april 1865 i Ford’s Theatre i den amerikanske hovedstad Washington D.C. Ægteparret var æresgæster, og den vinrøde, polstrede gyngestol, som den ældre mand sad i, var særligt udvalgt til ham blandt værterne, Familien Fords, personlige møbler.

Omkring kl. 22.15 sagde skuespiller Harry Hawk en af stykkets sjoveste replikker, og det midaldrende ægtepar lo ligesom resten af salen højt. I præcis dette øjeblik trådte en mand ind ad døren til logen, gik et skridt frem og skød den midaldrende bagfra med en pistol.
