In this week’s episode, I’m talking about The Singles Bill Of Rights with Madeleine Crown & Christina Campbell.

The Singles Bill of Rights (SBR) is a policy proposal. Its creation has an American focus and will work as a springboard for other countries to follow suit – adapting it to fit their own needs. Ultimately, Madeleine, Christina, and the rest of the SBR team would like to convene a UN Convention for Singles Bill of Rights, and create a Universal Bill of Rights for Singles.

Madeleine is a Lead Project Assistant for an engineering firm, a scandalous divorcee/born again Spinster, a single dog mom, and a self-guided researcher and writer regarding feminism and women’s creativity. She is currently working on a comparative study of women writers and an almanac of women writers across cultures and history, in addition to working on the Singles Bill of Rights.

Christina co-founded the singles' advocacy blog Onely, long before singles’ rights were cool. Her articles about marital status discrimination have appeared in The Atlantic and elsewhere. She is seeking representation for her memoir about invisible illness, which contains award-winning essays on physical and mental health. She lives in Northern Virginia with her infrared sauna and two semi-geriatric cats.

Both women are happily single and childfree.

Topics that we cover are:

  • how both women intend to be single for the rest of their lives;
  • how despite being married twice, Madeleine had always yearned for spinsterhood;
  • what exactly the Singles Bill of Rights is and why it’s so important;
  • how pervasive singlism is in all areas of society from politics to academia;
  • how they want to address such things as the perception of singlehood as something unusual, undesirable, or just a passing phase;
  • how they will be including the right to be charged for services without a penalty for being single;
  • how businesses, companies, and tax are set up for couples, not singles;
  • gift taxing, retirement accounts, and how important is for single people to be given the same rights as married couples;
  • how single people spend an extortionate amount more money than couples over the course of their lifetime;
  • bereavement leave, and the unfair treatment of singles in this regard;
  • how people are - consciously or unconsciously - considered more valuable when they’re married;
  • how singles aren’t really celebrated for anything during the course of their lifetime.
