On Thursday of the Seventh Week of Easter, a reading from a commentary on the gospel of John by Saint Cyril of Alexandria, bishop.

The Gospel according to John is quite different in character from the three synoptic gospels. It is highly literary and symbolic. It does not follow the same order or reproduce the same stories as the synoptic gospels. To a much greater degree, it is the product of a developed theological reflection and grows out of a different circle and tradition. It was probably written in the 90’s of the first century.

Saint Cyril was the Patriarch of Alexandria from 412 to 444. He was enthroned when the city was at the height of its influence and power within the Roman Empire. Saint Cyril wrote extensively and was a major player in the Christological controversies of the late 4th and early 5th centuries.

Saint Cyril is counted among the Church Fathers and also as a Doctor of the Church. His reputation within the Christian world has resulted in his titles, “Pillar of Faith” and “Seal of all the Fathers”.
