Julie Dirksen’s three key insights about modern change mastery: most training fails because it ignores immediate relevance; organizational change temporarily destroys people's competence and professional identity; corporate learning only addresses logic while ignoring the emotional brain that actually drives decisions. Julie Dirksen joins me to dissect why most corporate training feels like "high school, but worse." She's spent years figuring out how to design learning that actually changes behavior, not just fills heads with information. Her printer repair experiment reveals why engagement isn't about jazzing up content—it's about timing and immediate application. When your printer's broken and you need it fixed, suddenly that boring YouTube video becomes fascinating. But here's what really stuck with me: change doesn't just alter what people do, it shatters who they are. Take someone who's unconsciously competent at their job and force them to learn new processes, and you've just broken their professional identity. Julie introduces the elephant-rider metaphor to explain why purely rational training approaches fail. Your logical brain might understand why change is necessary, but your emotional, experiential brain—the elephant—often has other plans. If you're leading transformation efforts and wondering why smart people resist obviously good ideas, this conversation will shift how you think about supporting behavior change in organizations. Change Signal. Cut through the blather, the BS, and the noise to find the good stuff that works in change. If you’re a transformational leader seeking modern change mastery, you’re in exactly the right place. *** WHEN YOU’RE READY 🎧 A new episode every week (and sometimes two!) In this episode, Ruth talks to Belgium composer Hannes de Maeyer about the inspirations for writing music, particularly through collaboration. Whether it is his work with directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah for a decade, working with co-composer Ruben De Gheselle on the UK drama Patience, or different musicians like the Budapest Art Orchestra or singers Berre and Oum, Hannes has had the privilege of working with a variety of different people in a variety of different styles in his shows and movies. We also talk about writing for the same project in different countries such as "Professor T", the film scene in Belgium and Europe, musical ideas in "The Couple Next Door" as well as a love of Alan Menken's Disney music. Hannes De Maeyer is one of Belgium's most versatile composers, best known for his collaboration with director duo Adil El Arbi & Bilall Fallah ( Rebel, Gangsta, Black ) and from his original music to ITV prime time drama Professor T and psychological thriller series The Couple Next Doo r (Starz). In this episode, we look at the music of Mansfield Park (1999) written by Lesley Barber. We explore how the music aids in telling the story of this adaptation in combining elements of the Baroque and classical era with the minimalism in styles reflecting the older Austen story with Rozema's modern view. In this second part of a two-part episode, we look at how Patrick Doyle, Nicholas Hopper and Alexandre Desplat pick up the mantle from John Williams to continue the sounds and world of Harry Potter in films 4-8. From folk tunes, to new and unusual instruments, to new places such as the Ministry of Magic, as well as returning ideas from dragons to flying to magic in Hogwarts. Each composer has their own unique sound while still staying within the late romantic orchestral sound with a few quirky moments thrown in while the sounds of magic are continued in choir and celeste. In this first part of a two-part episode, we look at the variety of ways that John Williams creates the musical world of Harry Potter. From school songs to Quidditch, from dragons to goblins, from ghosts to moving staircases, John Williams combines the rich late-romantic orchestral sound with the slightly odd notes resembling 20th century composers such as Stravinsky and Prokofiev to create a world that seems both familiar and different. He also expands in the second and third film from celeste and choir to adding instruments from the Baroque and Renaissance, combining new sounds with old. This episode focuses solely on the first three movies composed by John Williams.
