In Ep #45 we have the articulate and knowledgeable Jasmeet Singh talking on the sensitive topic of abuse in the Sikh community. Abuse in all its forms (emotional, sexual, financial, physical) exists and is documented in every community, including the Sikh community.

More recently, Sikh parcharaks have been exposed online via social media and online mediums and the me too movement has helped in raising awareness within the community.

Personally, I know of people who have been abused by religious figures while they were children. These individuals haven't come forward and made the abuse public and I know only about the abuse because they are/were close friends who confided in me.

Abuse within any religious community is a contentious topic, victims are often not believed, blamed or ignored.

Abusers are often in a position of power, are respected, and will look for those they deem easy targets (estranged, financial difficulties, mental health issues). Furthermore, these 'Godmen/woman' have avid followers who idolise them and will rise up against anyone who makes any allegations against the person they idolise.

This unilateral power can make it difficult to put safeguarding measures in place from the start and potentially doesn't help the abuser either by, creating ample opportunities for abuse.

I respect Bhai Jasmeet Singh for talking about this sensitive topic and we will no doubt get a backlash from diehard fans of 'babay' 'saints'.

Objectively Bhai Sahibs' advice would protect parcharaks as well as safeguard the vulnerable...

1. Only stay in places based on recommendations that you know are safe

2. Make sure sleeping arrangements are in place for you to have your own safe space

3. Do not enter a room alone with a baba (this is to protect both parties, one from unjust allegations and the other from abuse)

4. If you are being pressured to part with money this is another red flag

5. If you are being pressured to drive someone around or give up your time this is another potential red flag (of your own accord is fine)

6. If you are being told to distance yourself from your friends, partner or family, this is another red flag.
