On this episode of Real Talk University, Andre and Christian sat down with Eddie Thomason, a speaker, networker, and personal growth expert that is local to Binghamton. Eddie graduated from Bryant University where he played collegiate football, and now works in sales. He dropped a ton of knowledge, but here are the 3 main takeaways:

  1. In-person networking should be as natural as possible. When approaching someone to introduce yourself, a great method to break the ice is to ask a question about what they’re wearing. “Hey man, where did you get those wing tips?” They’re likely to instantly be engaged, and the conversation can be organic from there. Try to stay away from scripting how you want to introduce yourself to someone, as this will more than likely lead to an awkward conversation and lessen the chances that you make a valuable connection. If you need, go to a networking event with a friend and see who can make more connections in a given time frame.
  2. Reading self-education books is critical, especially if you are in college. No matter your current situation, immersing yourself in entrepreneurial and personal growth books will be huge to your development both as a person and as a business person or entrepreneur. Eddie wished that he did as much consistent reading in college as he does today as a professional due to how much it has done for his career and mindset.
  3. Sales is a tremendous skill to develop early on, and it pays very well. Eddie got a job selling food at Ravens and Orioles games, and found himself become better at in person interactions while making a decent commission while still in high school. The skills he developed in that time still apply today, and he took a ton of value out of that experience. After he spent a few weeks working retail, he quickly found that the job could not compare to his sales position at the ball park. For anyone in high school or college, strongly consider picking up a part time sales position.
