Could you lose your job for having an Onlyfans account?
Recently Hollyoaks star Sarah Jayne Dunn has had to leave the soap after launching her #OnlyFans account.
For those who have been living under a rock. OnlyFans, is a subscription-based website where people pay money to view content, and has become well known across the internet since the start of quarantine in March last year. Creators can choose how much they want to charge for their content and the company takes 20% of the money made. Although there are other kinds of content that OnlyFans creators produce, such as fitness gurus and chef-influencers. The most common form is sexual and explicit content and many people have turned to the website in order to make money as a result of the rise in unemployment in 2020.
As the platform is heavily associated with sex work. This begs the question ‘What would colleagues, partners or future employers think if they found out?’
People celebrating OnlyFans are now being accused of exploiting others in an attempt to gain sign ups using their referral code. Which makes the site appear to be a sex-worker pyramid scheme.
It is portrayed as a quick money making site by influencers announcing their success. However the sad reality is those who do not have an established following could find themselves spiralling down the rabbit hole, resorting to creating explicit content under the pressure of making money fast. The need to constantly promote your page across multiple sites where your target audience go who would pay. Frequently responding to explicit messages from people demanding to see 'samples' before becoming subscribers.
It is because of the salacious element it raises the question about conflict between work and private life.
