“When there's a smile in your heart, there's no better time to start…”
It's Disney week! We're talking about Disney's 1953 animated classic version of Peter Pan, featuring the voices of Bobby Driscoll, Hans Conried, and Kathryn Beaumont. Drew grew up on this movie and, unsurprisingly, it holds a special place in his heart. Cassie, on the other hand... is not a fan. It was a long journey for the Disney company to figure out how they were going to retell J. M. Barrie's play and novel, so we discuss some of the history behind the movie before diving into our discussion of the movie. After we work our way through the movie's plot, we also discuss the 2002 sequel, Return to Never Land, Drew talks about Pan's presence in the Disney theme parks, and we announce next month's story! We discuss the male narrator, song parallels between the Disney movie and the stage musical, Peter's personality, the rhythmic nature of the dialogue, the Lost Boys' names, the timeline issues, the offensive Native and Indigenous representation, Never Smile At A Crocodile, the changes to Tink saving Peter, the importance of the month of February in Drew's life, Return to Never Land's WWII setting, parallels between the original and the sequel, Nana Two, the Octopus, and much more!
