The right to education is a universal human right, but in Afghanistan the Taliban does not have any interest in making this a reality for women. In December 2022 it has suspended university education for all female students, and before that, in March, girls were barred from returning to secondary school.
Since the Taliban seized power for a second time in August 2021, the situation for the women of Afghanistan has become unbearable. Women can no longer work in most sectors, they require a male guardian for long-distance travel and have been ordered to cover their faces in public. They have also been banned from parks and gyms, from working in national and international NGOs, and some people even think that the next step of the Taliban could be banning girls from primary education.
And given the importance of this topic, in this special episode I have interviewed an Afghan man in order to know what the majority of Afghan people think about the women's situation. And why a man, and not a woman as I usually do in this podcast? The reason is we all know what women in Afghanistan think about this, as they are the most affected ones. We have also heard from the Taliban, but we have not heard from the regular Afghan men. Do they support these terrible measures on women?
In this episode you will hear from Roman -my first male guest on the show- about the Taliban, who are these people and the context in which it was created. You will also know what the majority of people think about Taliban and its rules on women. Roman also gives us some hope as he believes the international community can play an important role in reversing the Taliban decisions. And most importantly, Roman and Maureen from the Support Association for the Women of Afghanistan (SAWA) - Australia, will tell us about ways we can support the women and girls of Afghanistan.
I hope you enjoy this special episode and please share if you like it.
