Bellfield targeted victims in neighborhoods he was well-acquainted with. Investigators located several former girlfriends, all of whom recounted a consistent pattern of behavior during their relationships with him. Initially, he was charming and delightful, but then he became entirely controlling and malevolent. Their accounts were remarkably similar, stated Detective Sergeant Jo Brunt. At the time of the assaults, Bellfield operated a wheel-clamping business in and around West Drayton, his place of residence. Sutton offered his insights.
Bellfield possesses an inflated sense of self-worth, believing he is a remarkable figure. He drives around in his vehicle, exuding an air of indifference, and spots a young blonde woman. When she rebuffs his advances, he perceives it as an affront to his ego, thinking, How dare you reject Levi Bellfield; you are of no value," leading to a violent reaction. This was evident in the case of Kate Sheedy, who wisely chose to avoid his vehicle by crossing the street. In response, he thought, You believe you are so astute, and subsequently ran her over.
While under police observation, Bellfield was noted driving his van and engaging with young women at bus stops. CCTV footage captured Amélie Delagrange walking towards Twickenham Green after missing her bus stop. It is possible that she paused to converse with Bellfield between the last two recorded sightings of her, after which she was attacked.
Bellfield was taken into custody in the early hours of 22 November 2004, under suspicion of having murdered Amélie Delagrange. Subsequently, on 25 November, he faced charges of three counts of rape occurring in Surrey and West London. On 9 December 2004, he was further charged with the assault of a woman in Twickenham, which took place between 1995 and 1997, and was subsequently remanded in custody. On 2 March 2006, Bellfield was rearrested and charged with the murder of Delagrange, as well as the attempted murder of Kate Sheedy and the attempted murder and infliction of grievous bodily harm on Irma Dragoshi. Finally, on 25 May 2006, he was charged with the murder of Marsha McDonnell.
