En los carnavales venecianos de 1624, hace exactamente 400 años, Monteverdi presentó Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda en el palacio de Girolamo Mocenigo. La dramática lucha de Tancredo y Clorinda, amantes y enemigos, llevó a Monteverdi a inventar soluciones musicales para poder transmitir todas las emociones presentes durante la batalla. La partitura fue publicada en su Octavo Libro de madrigales, junto con otras obras, como Il lamento della ninfa.
