In existential "questions about life and death" we often wanted wise insights and instructions for action. In empirical psychology wisdom is not yet a big topic, according to Ralph Hertwig our guest today, interviewed by Eliane Schmid. The focus of research is rather on good and rational decision-making. Very often the theories used here have their origin in economic theories. These theories claim to be so powerful that they can handle any kind of decision. From small game situations in the laboratory to the existential decisions of life.
Ralph Hertwig argues that these theories are too general, however, to capture truly rational behavior. Theories of rational behavior and decision-making would also have to include social norms and contexts, for example, in order to provide the claimed explanatory power and not talk past the phenomenon.

In existentiellen "Fragen über Leben und Tod" wünschten wir oft weise Einsichten und Handlungsanweisungen. In der empirischen Psychologie sei Weisheit noch kein großes Thema, so Ralph Hertwig unser heutiger Gast, den Eliane Schmid interviewt. Im Fokus der Forschung stehe vielmehr gutes und rationales Entscheiden. Sehr oft haben die hier benutzten Theorien ihren Ursprung in ökonomischen Theorien. Jene beanspruchen für sich so leistungsstark zu sein, dass sie jede Art der Entscheidung behandeln können. Von kleinen Spielsituationen im Labor zu den existentiellen Entscheidungen des Lebens.
Ralph Hertwig argumentiert, dass diese Theorien allerdings zu allgemein sind, um wirklich rationales Verhalten einzufangen. Theorien Rationales Verhaltens und Entscheidens müssten auch soziale Normen und Kontexte bspw. mit einbeziehen, um die beanspruchte Erklärungsleitsung erbringen zu können und nicht am Phänomen vorbeizureden.
