President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed on Thursday that he’s discussed with European leaders the possibility of deploying a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine. At a press conference in Brussels, Zelensky said consultations are ongoing, highlighting French President Emmanuel Macron’s role in the early talks. Zelensky added that certain leaders have given “positive signals,” though he declined to comment on the potential format of a peacekeeping mission, saying it is a “sensitive issue.”
A day earlier, Reuters reported that Macron was “driving” discussions among European nations to send troops to Ukraine “in the event of a ceasefire or peace deal.” The French president has accelerated his efforts to organize a peacekeeper initiative since meeting with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, who categorically rejects the possibility of including American troops in any potential peacekeeping operation in Ukraine.
