The BMW X5 M50i is a luxury SUV that delivers the thrill of driving that has made BMW one of the most respected brands in the world. Its renowned driver-focused design is evidenced by the iconic Hofmeister kink, a rear window that curves forward at its lower corner and a cockpit that provides a clear view of the road ahead. But the X5 is also equipped with cutting-edge technology that empowers drivers to adapt their ride according to their mood. This is thanks to its BMW driving modes, which allow you to customise the car’s throttle response, transmission, steering and suspension settings.

The X5’s drive mode options include Comfort, Sport, ECO Pro and Sport+. Each one delivers a different driving experience, ensuring the most comfortable ride or a dynamic one depending on your preferences and the road conditions.

In Comfort mode, the throttle and steering responses are less sensitive to give you a more relaxed ride. The suspension is optimised to absorb bumps and potholes, and the steering wheel is lighter for easier manoeuvres in tight spaces. It’s perfect for long drives or navigating traffic congestion.

If you’re looking for a more engaging drive, Sport mode is the one to choose. The engine and transmission become more responsive to your inputs, with a sharper throttle response and shorter gear shifts. The steering wheel is also lighter for more precise handling. However, this mode can be too intense for certain driving situations, and it may also reduce your fuel efficiency.

bmw specs ECO Pro is a fuel-efficient mode that can help you save money on gas by optimising the transmission and engine output to get the most out of your vehicle. The traction control system also becomes more active in this mode, helping you stay in control on slippery or wet roads.

Sport+ is the ultimate sports driving mode that’s perfect for racetracks and a clear highway. The engine and transmission respond very quickly to your inputs, with the traction control system keeping the car stable at high speeds. The chassis and suspension settings are also stiffer, making the X5 a bit more challenging to handle in heavy traffic.

The BMW X5 M50i also offers a manual mode for those who prefer to use the traditional stick shifter. Its standard eight-speed automatic transmission can be switched to a manual mode using the steering wheel buttons, a mousepad on the console or the clever, if gimmicky, optional hand gesture detector.

The BMW X5 is available in both RWD and AWD versions and can be ordered with either a petrol or diesel engine. A hybrid version of the M50i is due to arrive in 2023. It will combine the petrol and electric engines for more power and better fuel economy. Interestingly, the hybrid’s battery can be charged even when the car is not in motion, allowing it to remain ready for an emergency charge whenever you need it. This is a neat feature that gives the X5 an edge over its competitors in the luxury SUV segment.
