The Alaska Division of Elections has discontinued its ballot dropbox program, requiring absentee voters to either mail ballots with $1.46 postage or drop them off at election offices across the state. Absentee ballots need to be postmarked by Election Day, but voters are encouraged to mail them early to ensure timely processing.

A recent report shows an increase in cold-related injuries among Alaska's homeless population, with unhoused individuals experiencing significantly higher rates of frostbite and hypothermia. As winter approaches, Anchorage plans to open 400 shelter beds, though many people will likely still be exposed to the elements.

Eight young Alaskans have filed a lawsuit against the state over plans to build a natural gas pipeline, arguing it would harm the environment and future generations' access to Alaska’s natural resources. State representatives have called for the case's dismissal, but the judge has yet to make a decision.

In celebration of Red Ribbon Week, Alaska's Department of Health has announced a statewide door decorating contest for schools to promote drug-free lifestyles. The contest encourages creative, movie-themed designs and offers prizes, including a visit or video from the Governor or Health Commissioner. The contest runs through October 23, 2024.

Goldbelt Incorporated and Royal Caribbean Group are planning a new cruise port on Douglas Island, which aims to reduce downtown Juneau traffic and highlight Alaska Native culture. However, the City and Borough of Juneau had not been informed of the port development plan prior to the announcement. In response, city officials have raised questions about potential impacts and how the port will align with the city's long-term development and environmental goals.
