What are your plans for the weekend? There are so many fun events, festivals, and activities that call us each spring to come out and play. As a cycling enthusiast, I could fill my entire calendar up with the number of group rides offered up to me on Facebook. But I’ve got a problem, and maybe you have the same problem. I’m not ready for any of them. After months of not riding and not doing other exercise, I’m woefully out of shape. So, what can you and I do this spring to renew our physical strength? Especially as women over 40, what are some simple, but effective ways to feel strong and fit again to do all the activities we truly want to do?

I invited my gal pal Brigit Kin-Carlton to be with us today. Brigit is the founder and owner of Bdefined, Personal Fitness & Wellness Defined, in Williamsburg, VA. Bridgit and her team offer a customized, holistic, time-efficient approach to personal training. Having worked in the fitness industry for over 30 years Bridgit has all the creds: a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Management, Masters of Education in Exercise Science, plus lots of specialty certifications including Personal Trainer, Group Fitness Instructor, Weightlifting Coach, Nutrition Coach, and Functional Aging Specialist. She competes in triathlons, road races and most recently won fourth in her class at a regional fitness competition! I, on the other hand, am competing with myself to get back to feeling strong and fit again. This week we’re talking about how you can renew feeling strong and fit so you can confidently do those activities.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • Common health challenges facing women over 40
  • How to combat the biggest concern for aging women
  • Overcoming the excuses that keep you from moving more
  • Simple strength training exercises you can do right now
  • Realistic exercise goals for middle-aged women

Here’s a glance:

[4:47] Brigit is a steady and reliable Solid Sister who recognizes that when chip happens, she gets off-balance. Her go-to fav colors are cream on the nails and purple on the toes.

[8:15] Common health challenges facing women over 40, including loss of muscle and decreased metabolism.

[11:00] Strength training is so important at every age!

[18:02] Effective strength training exercises that any middle-aged women can start today.

[23:10] Overcoming the common speed bumps and finding the motivation to get moving.

[30:12] What to do if you are dealing with a chronic ache, pain, or injury.

[35:08] Realistic, inspiring fitness goals for women over 40.

[38:08] Can’t Be Beet is Brigit’s created nail color that reminds us that we’re too strong to be beat, and Bad Ass Bitch Blue inspires us to wake up every day being so much more than mediocre.

[42:05] In the Flip the Chip segment, Mary highlights Brigit’s body movement challenge to help combat loss of muscle mass.
